As you wander through the streets of Uganda in November and early December, you might notice something extraordinary in the air: an electric anticipation, flickering lights, and the hum of excited voices. It’s the start of nsenene season—the time when grasshoppers, known locally as nsenene, emerge in droves, bringing with them a unique, utterly irresistible flavor that has enchanted Ugandans for generations. For the uninitiated, “nsenene” may seem an unlikely delicacy, but ask any Ugandan, and they’ll tell you there’s nothing quite like it. Crisp, savory, and just the right amount of juicy, nsenene is more than just a snack—it’s an experience, a tradition, and a celebration.

The Season of Plenty

May, November, and early December bring the magic of the nsenene season, with November standing out as the time most eagerly anticipated by Ugandans. Known as the true season of abundance, it’s when nsenene enthusiasts across the country eagerly await the arrival of this cherished delicacy. The rainy season draws out these winged delights from their hiding places, and during this time, markets and roadside stalls come alive with vendors stirring massive basins of freshly caught grasshoppers. As night falls, you’ll see locals in areas like Nyendo in Masaka town, with large, bright bulbs and wide metal sheets, skillfully trapping the grasshoppers that are drawn to the light. For many Ugandans, these nsenene “harvests” are a time-honored ritual that has been passed down through generations.

The atmosphere is palpable—the hum of thousands of wings, the murmur of excited voices, the faint scent of grasshopper oil sizzling over hot fires. This seasonal abundance is celebrated as a gift from nature, and it’s one that Ugandans are all too happy to share.

A Taste That’s Hard to Forget

So what does nsenene taste like? Imagine the richest, deliciously savoury flavor with a hint of nuttiness, a dash of natural saltiness, and a satisfying crunch. Whether roasted or fried to perfection, nsenene boasts a texture that straddles the boundary between crunchy chips and savory nuts, complemented by a subtle juiciness that tantalizes your palate. For some, the taste is reminiscent of earthy, roasted seeds, but with a flavor that feels like it was made just for your taste buds.

With each bite, there’s a satisfying crunch, a subtle burst of flavor, and a warm, comforting aroma that fills the air. Many locals will tell you that nsenene tastes even better with a sprinkle of salt and a hint of chili for a fiery kick, while others love it plain and simple, savoring the pure, roasted goodness.

Sights, Sounds, and Smells of the Nsenene Experience

Picture yourself in a bustling Ugandan market on a nsenene night. The warm glow of makeshift roadside fires illuminates faces beaming with anticipation. There’s laughter, banter, and the clatter of pots as vendors prepare their stashes of nsenene. The grasshoppers are expertly tossed in hot pans, and as they cook, a mouthwatering, toasty aroma fills the air, mingling with the earthy scent of fresh rain on Ugandan soil.

The sound of sizzling nsenene is unmistakable—a pop, a hiss, and the subtle crackle of wings crisping up to perfection. It’s a sound that signals pure delight to anyone within earshot. It’s not uncommon to see friends and families gathering around, clutching newspaper cones filled with these delectable treats, sharing stories, laughter, and, of course, bites of their favorite seasonal snack.

A Snack with Stories and Smiles

Ugandans don’t just eat nsenene—they savor it, they celebrate it, and they laugh about it. Nsenene season brings with it endless anecdotes: from the tales of adventurous kids trying to catch the biggest grasshoppers to the uncles who swear their secret recipe makes the crispiest nsenene in town. Even tourists who are daring enough to try nsenene often find themselves won over by its surprising flavor and the warm sense of community that surrounds it.

While some might initially hesitate at the idea of eating a grasshopper, many are won over after the first bite. The humor lies in the reactions, the looks of surprise, and the inevitable chuckle as a newcomer takes that second, eager bite. Nsenene is one of those rare foods that not only tantalizes your taste buds but also brings people together, bridging cultures with a shared appreciation for something so simple, yet so delightful.

More Than Just a Snack—A Cultural Icon

To Ugandans, nsenene is more than just food; it’s a reminder of home, of family gatherings, of the unique rhythm of Ugandan life. It’s a treat that unites generations and invites tourists to taste the authentic flavors of Uganda. This small, unassuming grasshopper carries with it the spirit of a nation—resilient, joyful, and open-hearted.

So, if you find yourself in Uganda during nsenene season, don’t miss the chance to indulge in this crispy, savory delight. Let yourself be swept up in the excitement, savor the flavors, and share in the laughter. After all, nsenene isn’t just a snack—it’s an invitation to experience Uganda, one bite at a time.

Welcome to Uganda, where every sunrise brings a new adventure, every encounter promises a story worth retelling, and every sunset hinges on unforgettable experiences. Our land is a mosaic of diverse landscapes, colorful cultures, and untamed wilderness that have earned it the endearing title of the “Pearl of Africa.” Uganda isn’t just a place of beauty and serenity; it’s a playground for thrill-seekers craving heart-pounding adventure and raw, wild landscapes. If you’re an adrenaline junkie, prepare to meet your match in Uganda. From the rush of white-water rapids to the exhilaration of sky-high views, every corner of this country offers a daring escape into the extraordinary.

Conquer the Nile Rapids in Jinja

Nothing says adrenaline quite like white-water rafting on the world’s longest river. The Nile in Jinja boasts some of the most intense Grade 4 and Grade 5 rapids, where roaring waves and powerful currents challenge even the most seasoned rafters. Feel the thrill as you plunge through turbulent waters, battling rapids with names like “Bad Place” and “Overtime,” which promise an experience you’ll never forget. And for an even bigger rush, you can try body surfing, letting the river’s wild currents carry you downstream.

If rafting isn’t enough, why not bungee jump over the Nile? Take a leap off a towering platform, free-falling toward the river with nothing but a bungee cord keeping you airborne. Jinja’s bungee jumping spot offers the best views, with the vibrant green forest and flowing river beneath you—a pure rush of adrenaline, completed with a dunk into the river for the ultimate thrill.

Zipline through the Mabira Forest

The Mabira Forest is home to one of the most thrilling canopy “zip-line” systems the Pearl has to offer; the Mabira Forest Canopy Skyway. You will be able to glide through the tallest trees, soaring through one of Uganda’s most breathtaking bio-diverse habitats. Participants are hoisted with top notch harnesses, American art high ropes aand helmets that meet international safety standards so safety is guaranteed. With a bird’s eye view over the lush canopy, thrill-seekers can indulge in the splendour of the forest floor with creatures like red-tailed monkeys and grey-cheeked mangabey while flying past birds like the yellow and grey long bills and big blue turacos. Whether you’re a first-timer or a seasoned adventure enthusiast, the Mabira zip-line promises a safe, breathtaking adventure among Uganda’s natural wonders.

Quad Biking through the Ugandan terrains

For those who want to feel the raw power of an engine, quad biking in the Jinja area offers a chance to rip through muddy trails, splash through streams, and speed across open fields for all ages. This off-road experience is perfect for thrill-seekers who want to explore Uganda’s magnificent landscapes in a hands-on way. Guided tours offer varied trails for both beginners and experienced riders, allowing you to weave through villages, banana plantations, and riversides, all while embracing the thrill of the ride.

Mountain Climbing and Rock Climbing Adventures

Uganda’s towering peaks and rugged landscapes are a paradise for mountain climbers and rock climbers. Mount Elgon, straddling the Uganda-Kenya border, is a volcanic giant offering challenging treks through breathtaking terrain. The ascent to Wagagai Peak (4,321 meters) involves traversing stunning caves, waterfalls, and dense bamboo forests. Or, if you prefer a steeper, more direct climb, the Rwenzori Mountains—often called the “Mountains of the Moon”—offer routes for serious climbers eager to summit Margherita Peak, the third-highest in Africa and tallest in Uganda.

For a pure rock-climbing thrill, the Sipi Falls area offers climbs on sheer cliffs overlooking the waterfalls. These climbs provide a unique combination of technical rock climbing and scenic rewards. Each ascent reveals sweeping views of the valleys and plains below—a perfect backdrop for adventure lovers.

Paragliding Over the Lakes and Valleys

For an entirely different perspective, take to the skies with paragliding experiences near Lake Bunyonyi or the valleys around Mount Elgon. Strap into a harness and soar over terraced hills, sparkling lakes, and rolling landscapes, feeling the cool air rush past as you drift along thermal currents. Guided tandem flights let you take in sweeping views of Uganda’s stunning topography from above, creating a sense of freedom that’s as exhilarating as it is peaceful.

Kayaking and Extreme Canoeing on Lake Bunyonyi

Discover the majestic Source of the Nile in Uganda, where Africa’s longest river begins its epic journey. Experience breathtaking landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and thrilling adventure activities at this iconic destination.

Lake Bunyonyi’s calm waters are perfect for an adventure-filled paddle across its scenic expanse, but if you’re up for something wilder, head back to Jinja’s section of the Nile. Extreme kayaking lets you tackle some of the Nile’s fiercer rapids in a solo kayak—a true test of skill and nerve as you navigate powerful waves and currents. For the fearless, this experience is a chance to get up close with the river’s raw power while mastering one of the world’s most revered kayaking spots.

Wild Hikes and Rappelling at Sipi Falls

Sipi Falls is not just a beautiful place for sightseeing; it’s a paradise for adventurers. Tackle the series of three waterfalls in a guided hike that includes rappelling down the tallest fall, at 100 meters, with nothing but the roar of water and the sheer cliff face before you. As you descend, the mist from the falls refreshes and exhilarates, adding an extra layer of thrill to the experience. The views alone are worth every second of the climb and rappel.

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Uganda Tourism Board (UTB) Lilly Ajarova has firmly reassured travelers about the safety of destination Uganda, stating that the country is entirely free from any security threats.

Ajarova made these remarks while presenting before a group of media owners and their top editors, an overview of Uganda’s tourism sector at Kyangabi Crater Resort, in Rubirizi district, a few kilometers from Queen Elizabeth National Park.

This engagement was part of the editors’ familiarization trip aimed at showcasing Uganda’s vibrant wildlife, conservation efforts and strengthening the partnership between UTB and the media, to enhance tourism coverage.

It was also intended to guide them on responsible tourism reporting and sustainable resource management, highlighting the importance of these practices in maintaining Uganda’s natural heritage.

During the trip, the team explored the diverse ecosystem of Queen Elizabeth National Park, with a major emphasis on learning about the country’s conservation efforts and its unique tourist offerings, which stands as a testament to Uganda’s rich biodiversity.

In her impassioned address, CEO Ajarova emphasized Uganda’s unique selling points, particularly focusing on the safety and security of the destination. “We are a very secure, safe country in the Great Lakes region,” She said, adding that Uganda stands as one of the top ten most biodiverse countries globally. She highlighted the country’s strategic location at the heart of Africa, making it an accessible and a desirable destination for travelers.

On the diversity of the country’s tourist offerings, Ajarova said that Uganda is not only known for its stunning landscapes and wildlife but also for its friendly and hospitable people, with a rich cultural heritage.

“According to the UN reports, we are the happiest country in Africa, and globally, we are considered one of the friendliest countries. If we develop our cultural tourism with enough resources, it is one way by which we will reduce the pressure on wildlife” she noted. The CEO also detailed the government’s strong commitment to tourism development, citing Uganda’s inclusion among the ten fastest-growing destinations in the world, according to the World Travel and Tourism Council survey of 2019.

She also pointed out the economic benefits of tourism, noting that one US dollar spent by a foreign tourist generates an average of 2.5 dollars in economic activity, contributing significantly to the nation’s export earnings and employment. Furthermore, Ajarova stressed the importance of improving infrastructure and communication networks to support tourism. “When we push for tourism roads, it is not only tourists who benefit; everyone in the country benefits from improved infrastructure,” she explained.

Also addressing the editors, the head of the Public Relations unit at UTB Gessa Simplicious, said that UTB collaborates with other agencies like UWA, UPDF, and the Police, to perpetuate proactive measures such as the deployment of high-tech drone rangers, increased security patrols, and permanent military presence to ensure everyone’s safety in the national parks. “There are some security personnel you cannot cite with your naked eye, so as I can say, the country is safe, we are really safe,” He said. These editors expressed profound gratitude with UTB’s efforts of organizing what they termed “an extra-ordinary experiential tour” and vowed to work collaboratively with the agency to positively shape the image of destination Uganda.

The trip, which also focused on promoting Uganda’s image as a sustainable and inclusive tourism destination, is expected to foster better understanding and reporting on tourism issues among the media representatives.

Ensuring safety is top priority for both tourists and citizens in Uganda. The government, in
collaboration with agencies like the Uganda Wildlife Authority(UWA), Uganda Peoples Defence
Forces(UPDF), and the Police, have demonstrated a strong commitment to ensuring the
security and safety of all visitors during wildlife adventures in national parks and other tourist
attractions. As the tourism high season, spanning from June to December, begins, the country is poised to
receive a large influx of international visitors seeking adventure. During this period, tour
operators are particularly busy and profitable. The government is keen on reassuring visitors
that their security is the utmost priority.
Uganda, referred to as “The Green Gold of Africa” by Richard Bangs, a travel journalist from the
United States, is endowed with captivating tourist attractions, notably its vibrant flora and fauna.
These attractions, including the country’s abundant wildlife, are predominantly located in its vast
national parks and wildlife reserves. Uganda boasts ten national parks, twelve wildlife reserves,
five community wildlife management areas, and thirteen wildlife sanctuaries.
The country features the glaciated Rwenzori Mountains at one end and the sprawling savannas
of Kidepo on the other, offering a wide range of adventures such as rafting the upper Nile and
birdwatching with over 1,000 bird species. Uganda also showcases all the great wildlife of Africa
alongside a rich tapestry of cultural diversity. Winston Churchill, impressed by its diverse
environments and wildlife, dubbed Uganda the Pearl of Africa in his 1908 book, “My African
    Journey.”
With these impressive natural wonders, Uganda has seen a significant influx of tourists seeking
relaxation and fun in its stunning landscapes. In 2024, the country was ranked fourth on the list
of the most visited destinations in the world by Bradt Guides, an international tourism agency.
Despite Uganda’s richness in tourist attractions, the security and safety of visitors are
paramount. In collaboration with UWA, UPDF, and the Police, proactive measures such as the
deployment of high-tech drone rangers, increased security patrols, and permanent military
presence have been implemented to ensure everyone’s safety in the national parks.
These measures provide reassurance that tourists can confidently explore these magnificent
national parks. Kibaale National Park’s strict and rigorous safety protocols further enhance the
overall visitor experience, making Uganda’s national parks both safe and captivating for wildlife
    enthusiasts and those seeking relaxation.
A team of highly trained drone rangers deployed by UWA for continuous park surveillance not
only enhances security but also deters other irregularities, such as bushfires and problematic
animals, providing assurances of rapid response in case of any threats.
In Queen Elizabeth National Park, proactive intelligence gathering and regular patrols,
conducted jointly by park rangers and the military along major roads in Ishasha and Kasenyi
Katwe, ensure the safety of tourists. The permanent military presence in the park further
    strengthens the security framework.

“We are leveraging cutting-edge technology to safeguard the park and its visitors. When we run
the drones across these boundaries, we can identify problems and deploy accordingly to
mitigate the given challenges, be it terrorism, poaching, or even fire outbreaks,” said Bashir
    Hangi, the UWA spokesperson.
Tourists can enjoy captivating experiential game drives, with the Kasenyi Katwe road fully open,
allowing visitors to explore the park’s vast array of natural wonders. Community engagement is
also key, with strong relationships between local communities, law enforcement, and tourism
stakeholders promoting the reporting of suspicious activities and sharing of vital information.
Besides, international cooperation through partnerships and intelligence exchange aims to
counter radicalization and terrorism, creating a safe environment for all.
Despite the incident in October 2023, when a couple was gunned down by unknown assailants
in Queen Elizabeth National Park, visitor numbers have remained stable, indicating confidence
in the heightened security measures. In October 2023 alone, over 900 visitors, including many
international tourists, visited the park without any security issues reported, demonstrating strong
belief in the park’s commitment to visitor safety.
Earlier this year, Csilla Zavier, a Swiss national visiting the park, expressed confidence in the
security measures, stating, “We see the Ugandan army all over the park, which makes us feel
safe. We are really enjoying our time here, especially the breathtaking wildlife.”
Kibaale National Park, renowned as the primate capital of Uganda, continues to attract nature
enthusiasts with its diverse array of primates, rich biodiversity, and scenic landscapes. It is
recognized as the best destination for chimpanzee tracking in Uganda, offering a golden
opportunity to witness over 1,500 registered chimpanzees in their natural habitat.
The Park has instituted similar measures, including armed ranger escorts for visitors and regular
joint patrols by the army and rangers to promptly address security concerns. Detailed safety
briefings ensure that all visitors are well-informed and prepared for a secure wildlife adventure.
UWA has established stringent safety measures for chimpanzee trekking, including maintaining
a safe distance from the primates, avoiding unnecessary noise, and discouraging flash
photography. Only visitors above the age of 15 are allowed to participate, and no sick person is
permitted to join the adventure to prevent the transmission of diseases from humans to
    primates.
Highly experienced tour guides and heavily armed park rangers accompany trekkers, providing
both guidance and protection, while regular security checks at the entrance ensure no
dangerous or harmful items are brought into the park.
Murchison Falls National Park, another premier destination, continues to attract nature
enthusiasts with its dramatic waterfall, rich biodiversity, and scenic landscapes, along with
opportunities to see the Big Five in their natural habitat. The park has instituted similar security
measures, including armed ranger escorts for visitors and regular patrols to promptly address
    any security concerns.
Embrace the opportunity to witness Uganda’s breathtaking wildlife and natural beauty, knowing
that your security is a top priority.

Kigali, Rwanda, 19th June 2022: Uganda Tourism Board in partnership with the Uganda High Commission in Kigali, will showcase Uganda’s tourism potential during the 26th Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) 2022 in Kigali, Rwanda under the theme ’Delivering A Common Future: Connecting, Innovation, and Transforming.’’

Ahead of the official opening ceremony, last evening, the Uganda High Commission- Kigali and UTB hosted a Uganda Night at the Chancery in Kacyiru and unveiled the new Pearl of Africa Destination brand to over half a million potential travelers in the city of a thousand hills. Uganda’s tourism private sector will also participate in networking opportunities during the Street Festival that will showcase Uganda’s unique cuisine, culture and tourism potential in partnership with the Uganda Tourism Association.

Rwanda is the second leading source market for Uganda after Kenya fetching over 22,660 tourists in 2020 following a significant decline in arrivals in 2019. Both countries share common transboundary ethnicity, history, culture and natural resources. Therefore, these shared resources and heritage call for collective marketing and tourism product development through collaborative transboundary interventions.

Uganda’s participation in CHOGM 2022 is an excellent opportunity to promote Uganda’s tourism opportunities under the “Explore Uganda” destination brand and to communicate to CHOGM 20022 delegates about the transboundary tourism products between the two nations” Amb. Anne Katusiime, Uganda’ Deputy High Commissioner to Kigali, Rwanda.

On her part, Ms Lilly Ajarova, the UTB CEO applauded the Uganda High Commission in Kacyiru, Kigali for spearheading Uganda’s tourism promotion during the CHOGM 2022. “The event and its side activities will create amazing tourism opportunities for Uganda’s public and private sector stakeholders but also promote intra-regional travel between the two states. The East African Community has also developed a joint marketing strategy that will position East Africa as one a single tourism destination. Member states will create itineraries that include exclusive tourism experiences across the six countries. Travel in the region has also been enhanced by the East African Tourist Visa between Uganda, Kenya and Rwanda.
